Mr. Herbert R. ("Dick") Schulze

Mr. Dick is a graduate of MIT in electrical engineering and the University of Chicago law school. He is admitted to practice in California and South Dakota and before the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office. He served as a Judge Advocate in the U.S. Air Force for five years of active service and 25 years in the reserve, retiring as a colonel in 1997. After his release from active duty he was a law clerk to U. S. District Judge Howard Turrentine in the Southern District of California. From 1976 to 1984 he practiced general business law in San Diego. In 1982 he became a judge pro tem of the North San Diego County municipal court. His specialization in intellectual property began when he represented the plaintiff in a trade dress lawsuit between two hot dog vendors at the San Diego County Fair, following which he became an associate with the Southern California IP law firm Fulwider, Patton, Lee & Utecht. While he was with the Fulwider firm he maintained his own part-time law practice in Rapid City as the only patent attorney in the State of South Dakota.

Until his retirement in March 2007, Mr. Dick served for 19 years in the Legal Departments of Agilent Technologies and Hewlett-Packard Company, where as Managing Counsel in Intellectual Property he supervised a staff of IP professionals in California, Colorado and Singapore. Most recently, he and his staff developed patent strategy and wrote patent applications for all three of Agilent�s business groups. He was personally responsible for training many new patent agents and young attorneys, several of whom are now in responsible management positions in the legal departments of both companies.

Mr. Dick was born in San Francisco. He has two grown children and three grandchildren. When he is not in the office he can be found at Northstar-at-Tahoe Ski Resort, in passionate pursuit of his second career as a professional snowboard instructor.
